The Legend Unfolds
In a world where push-to-start is king, convenience is a must, and every second counts, our wooly-headed protagonist is about to suffer a moment of ultimate self-betrayal.
He had it all… the newest, cleanest ride, the perfect little suburban family, the weekend getaway precisely planned.
The road trip playlist was queued, snacks packed, and everything was going according to plan, until…
Somewhere in the void between his morning couch surfing sesh, and the wifey’s daily Starbucks order of one venti iced matcha latte with half almond milk, half oat milk, one pump of honey blend, two pumps of lavender, a dash of moon-charged cinnamon,
topped with cold foam made of goat milk and affirmations, and dusted with ceremonial-grade fairy dust—The key to the BMW had mysteriously vanished!
Perhaps it had fallen out of his pocket. Perhaps stolen by rogue squirrels. The world may never know. Now, with time ticking away and three, not-so-patient or forgiving contingents of the feminine variety likely to start planning his demise, he found himself immediately facing a decision that has perplexed drivers for generations…
Call a locksmith—masters of the mysterious arts of cutting, cloning, and coding keys in vans that smell like WD-40 and destiny.
or hail an Uber downtown to the Dealership—the land of free coffee, long waits, and key replacements priced like small yachts.
The battle is fierce. The stakes are high. And only one can truly be called…Key Master!
The Lock Whisperer
The maverick, nomadic locksmith—armed and ready at a moments notice to hit the open road in his trusty van filled with the latest and greatest gadgets and gismos, complimentary Slim Jims, and fruit snacks, all purchased and packaged with care directly from American Key Supply.
Believe it or not, many people often overlook, or fail to consider calling a locksmith when faced with an automotive related predicament. In fact, the only time they had called a locksmith before today, was when the kids had locked the bathroom door behind them, leaving it both occupied and simultaneously unoccupied at the same time. After several attempts, and a few mangled bobby pins and paper clips, a decision was eventually made to seek help from the infamous Lock Whisperer.
Realistically, automotive locksmithing accounts for a significant portion of the locksmithing industry. But, I suppose the extra-shiny showroom floors and indoor muscle cars, overly-aggressive hand shakes, and waiting rooms that look awfully similar to an AA meeting, are often the first things to come to mind when one is singularly-focused on “where did I put that darn key fob?”
However, locksmiths are notoriously known for their speed and expertise, and can offer heroic support in a time of need. They are typically mobile and can pull up in a flash, in many cases offering 24-hour service and convenience that strongly rivals waiting at a dealership. They also come heavily armed with knowledge and tools, allowing them to get the job done quickly, effectively, and have you back on the road again faster and less furiously.
The Fleet Commander
Meanwhile, somewhere in a remote area of town, where there are no homes, or popular dining establishments, there sits a large array of industrial sized buildings, all-lined up in a row with more unavailable parking spaces than you can shake a stick at. Vehicles of every shade, make and model, are lined up and down every square foot of the property, with only a few short feet of distance to divide between each brand’s particular dominion.
Chrysler, Ford, Dodge, Ram, Chevy, Hyundai, Honda, Tesla, VW, Mitsubishi, and more—in this part of town, the machines reign supreme. A modern fleet of luxury, horsepower, and price, and the king who resides over them goes by many names, with many…so, so many business cards and a handshake firmer than a debt collector with a deadline. This is the home of the 4-wheeling, deal-or-no dealing, key fob wielding automotive sales consultant, aka…The Fleet Commander.
Now don’t be too quick to judge a book by its cover or get too distracted by the shiny new cars, tucked-in polo t-shirt with bounty fresh scent, and unlimited free Folgers with powdered coffee creamer. As opposed to his rugged, blue collar rival in the key-cutting van, this guy can appear like the safe bet, while seamlessly selling you assurance, backed by insurance and guaranteed warranty service. Locksmiths, on the other hand are not all created equal and some may not carry the same level of warranty or insurance, in case things go wrong.
However, dealerships are known for charging much higher prices for this level of perceived “convenience”. But how convenient is it if you have to travel to them to get your key replaced, when your only means of getting to them is currently locked out and immobile? So aside from the higher costs of key replacement services, you also may incur additional Uber/Lyft costs, as well as the time cost associated with service limited to open business hours and longer wait times.
May the Fob Be With You
Whichever side you choose is ultimately your decision and your destiny. However, I think I speak for most when I say that lower prices and convenient service are a winning combination when choosing where to go for your key replacement needs. Therefore, your local locksmith just might be a superhero in disguise that you can safely rely on to help get you moving again. While dealerships may be a great one-stop shop for everything automotive, from sales to service, when it comes to knowledge, expertise, speed, and customer service, there really can only be 1 true Key Master—and no, it’s not the school janitor.

Dealership have more representation with money and with Nastf board . Unless the manufacturers stand up for the locksmith industry they will eventually sell less and less machines and will fall in line with dealer only software and the extra layers of this or that . It will be a very small share of the righteous locksmiths that "you have to invest" As someone who currently has 4 machines have had Nastf in the past and all my current licensing is that if you comply with all the requirements that it will increase their businesses from the scammers is what they are unaware is that the dealers will push harder to make it eventually dealer only with very few that locksmiths can do . I guess we will find out how it works out . Buy from my perspective I will make sure Majority of my business is not reliant on Automotive . Just my opinion
